THE STORY
Leonardo da Vinci drew the Vitruvian Man around 1490 as a picture of the “ideal” human body. This design asks who got left out of that picture, and answers with DNA. Every human carries the same code, written in the same four letters. The artwork wraps the classic figure in helices, sacred geometry and lab notes, and calls it what it is: the Hue-Man Project.
It’s Afrofuturism, the tradition of imagining the future through Black culture, science and myth, from Sun Ra to Black Panther. The critic Mark Dery coined the term in 1993, but the idea was always older.
The Southern California connection
OCTAVIA BUTLER’S PASADENA
One of Afrofuturism’s greatest writers came from Southern California. Octavia E. Butler, born in Pasadena in 1947, set Parable of the Sower in a near-future SoCal and became the first science fiction writer to win a MacArthur “genius” grant. Pasadena still honors her.
