THE STORY
This shirt is a history lesson you can wear to the cookout. In October 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland. By 1969, the Free Breakfast for Children program was feeding kids in cities across the country. In Chicago, a young Fred Hampton was building the original Rainbow Coalition across race and neighborhood lines. In New York, Malcolm X had already shown a generation how to speak without asking permission.
The artwork pulls that era into bold panels and gritty ink, the way a comic would tell it, because these stories deserve the same energy as any superhero origin.
The Southern California connection
LOS ANGELES
The movement ran through LA too. On December 8, 1969, the LAPD’s brand-new SWAT unit raided the Black Panther Party’s Southern California office at 41st and Central, one of the first major SWAT operations in the country. The shirt names Oakland, Chicago and NYC, but South Central lived that history. Read more in our guide to urban wear in Los Angeles.

How to wear it
- ’90s West Coast: sized up one, under a flannel buttoned at the top, creased work pants, clean Cortez.
- Clean and simple: true to size with dark denim and white sneakers.
- Cold nights: under a leather or work jacket, so the panels peek through.
Fabric and care
100% organic ring-spun cotton, midweight and smooth, so the comic linework prints sharp. Wash inside out in cold water and hang dry or tumble dry low. Don’t iron over the print.
